Motivating bureaucrats through social recognition: External validity—A tale of two states

چکیده
Bureaucratic performance is a crucial determinant of economic growth, but little real-world evidence exists on how to improve it, especially in resource-constrained settings. We conducted field experiment social recognition intervention record keeping health facilities two Nigerian states, replicating the – implemented by single organization bureaucrats performing identical tasks. Social improved one state had no effect other, highlighting both potential benefits and also sometimes-limited generalizability behavioral interventions. Furthermore, differences facility-level observables did not explain cross-state impacts, suggesting that it may often be difficult predict external validity.
